Facts about Gol and Golsfjellet

Located in the middle of Hallingdal, Gol is a natural centre for the other towns in the valley and the traffic between East -and West Norway.

The name Gol has its origins in "Gordr", the old name of the river, Norse for enclosure.

Before, agriculture was the most important industry in Gol. Now tourism and other businesses have taken over as the most important sources of employment, but agriculture is still important, which can be seen in the beautiful landscape.

Today, Gol is the largest trade - and service centre in Hallingdal. Here you'll find most of what you need in shopping, car dealerships, building supplies etc.

Gol is also the home of several public sevices, such as the food health department, tax office, employment office and others.

The living standard in the town is high, and Gol has exellent coverage in kindergardens, schools and health care. There is also a rich selection of culture-and leisure activities through the sports facilities (football, track and field, handball, skating, cycling, skiing, biathlon, swimming, alpine etc.) and youth clubs.

In other words, Gol is a great place to be whether you live here or are just visiting. And if so, you are very welcome!
